Philip the Good had this manuscript written and magnificently illuminated after his decisive victory over the citizens of Ghent. The full-page miniature faithfully depicts the scene described in the text, when the defeated burghers came out to meet Philip wearing only their shirts or a black robe, barefoot and bareheaded, and had to beg for mercy.
